Weller, Bragg and co were never like this.
Indeed, and what a pity, too. You make a valid point, I think: how unsexy was all that? Despite it's well-meant basis. How boring, how unaesthetic. Surely that was part of its failure. Don't they know how powerful and seductive the veneer is? Bragg I have time for. But Weller... Christ... and don't get me started on that turncoat Ben Elton. Sickbag please.
Ben Elton ... the hypocrisy of the man is astounding.
Yes, Red Wedge ... Neil Kinnock's ill-advised flirtation with pop music and all that.

Remember that Bananarama video Kinnock was on?
Elton - all that pretend working-class leftist stuff, then working with Lloyd-Webber and then those yoyos in Queen! One could not write that life! Lloyd-Webber... what was Elton thinking?! When he, L-W, and others - like Frank Bruno and Phil Collins - said if the Labour Party gets in in 1997 they'll leave the UK, they should've been made to leave. The other one is Ken Roach... What a crew!
Remember the Tories version of Red Wedge? - featured Gary Numan...!
