This - 2001 in general and the stargate sequence in particular - refers to endless return, circularity, for me. Thus: man looks - seemingly beyond himself, at the infinite, but it is himself he looks for. Hence, I grub around in my wheelie-bin mind for pithy, partial images/notions which might both add to this idea and which, along the way, might forge interesting connections with stuff I like and value. This is kind of Borges, to me; but Borges with references drawn from supposedly more lo-fi sources. That move itself has a kind of punk edge to it; a kind of working-class anger. I like a world where punk and surrealism can function side-by-side with Prog and philosophy.

So, it's kind of a 'Carla x2 Situation', on first brain foraging - for no other reason than to play with these notions.
(1) Carla the Elephant - from Brass Eye, head stuck up its own guts, as foil for Chris Morris's satire on how the media and celebrity has its own head up its own arse; so much so that the bozos who function as Morris' victims cannot see the bollocks nature of what they are reading about this elephant. Genius - and most telling. A perfect ouroboros. Shades, too, of McLuhan's idea that technological societies are essentially canibalistic: Carla ingesting her own head, just like those celebrities.
(2) Carla - second track on Scott Walker's latest LP, 'The Drift'. This tells the story of Mussolini's wife, Carla, who chose to die with the Dictator. Walker conducts his narrative from a tactle, humanistic, somewhat emotionally-rarefied vantage-point, rather than a narrow political or documentorial one. He describes the corpse in erotic terms, under close-inspection. Then there's the image of a'little bird', coming into his room, regarding him whilst heregards it, then it flies away. This, I think, hints at the way in which our orbits touch briefly then move away. More endless return and circularity, then. Similarly, these themes exist within how the song describes a kind of love beyond death, love beyond the threat of death.

The implied triangle is, then:

Kubrick / Morris/ Walker

From that, an ouroboros. What else is there?

Thanks, Cj. Glad my ramble appeals. These little pieces on the anatomy behind a given post are partly-prompted by your comments of a few weeks ago, I have to say. That's good. You got me thinking. That's why I blog. That's why I come here: to be prompted into thought, further artworking. So, I'm playing with that idea - in and around the pictures, seeing how pic and caption work together, etc. For me, all these things generate other artworks - pic begats caption begats comment begats comment ... with the blog itself being the artwork. I'm sure you see Discharge like that. There are some very interesting artists/writers on there. One has one's favourites, of course; but it is the totality of those individual outputs which constitutes discharge. So it is with me here, in this blog; all those layers - posts and their reactions if any - one thing in essence.

i find, in some unfathomable way, a link between art/blogging and the graphic novel. not sure why...but a hidden nerve twitches and triggers that chord.
images.
words.
dismembered and at possible odds. a collage of sorts where one meidium almost conflicts with another and that triggers a multi-set of emotional and intellectual responses flying.
probably talking a load of bollocks here but that is my gut reaction.
and yes, it is multi-layered with a veritable mish mash of ideas but i like it!

I agree, CJ. I, too, skirt that comics/graphic novel thing - at least in my background thinking. I grew up on marvel, and still love that stuff; though I don't read those things anymore, they still resonate as objects of beauty. I credit my early goodish vocabularly to comics. Lots of my images could fit into contemporary versions; and there's that whole image-with-caption thing which comes from comics. Deep in the archives to this very blog, there are lots of direct and indirect refs to Marvel.

Nice one.

Of course, Alan Moore lives less than 2 miles away from us here at Cafe Abdab.
