I thought about why while I was out for a walk. It embodies something battered, embattled, british.
I agree. It's a quasi-portrait of an exactly battered - ideologically-battered - British subject, on one level, for sure. But documentary can only explain so far and so much. I prefer to think of it as more Masson than Loach.
